What Is the Difference Between the First and Second Bankruptcy Course?
Federal law requires individual bankruptcy filers to complete two separate courses — one before filing and one after. They are completely separate requirements with separate certificates. Completing one does not satisfy the other.
Course 1 — Pre-Filing Credit Counseling
When: Before you file your bankruptcy petition
What it covers: Your financial situation, alternatives to bankruptcy, and a personal budget analysis
Approving agency: U.S. Department of Justice — EOUST
Certificate: Filed with the court along with your bankruptcy petition
Time limit: The certificate is valid for 180 days — you must file your case within 180 days of completing this course
Course 2 — Personal Financial Management Instructional Course (Debtor Education)
When: After you file your bankruptcy petition, before discharge is granted
What it covers: Budgeting, money management, credit, consumer resources, and financial crisis planning
Approving agency: U.S. Department of Justice — EOUST
Certificate: Filed with the court before discharge is granted, along with Official Form 423

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take both courses at the same time? No. Course 1 must be completed before you file. Course 2 must be completed after you file. The sequence is required by federal law.
Does Bankruptcy Logic offer Course 1? No. Bankruptcy Logic offers only the debtor education course (Course 2). If you need Course 1, your attorney can point you to an approved provider or you can search the EOUST-approved provider list at justice.gov.
I already have a certificate from Course 1. Is that the same certificate I need to file for discharge? No. Your Course 1 certificate was filed when you submitted your bankruptcy petition. You need a separate certificate from Course 2 to file before discharge. They are two different documents.
